Hours of Work: 15 hours per week, incl. weekends as and when required
Reports to: Community Programmes Manager
Key Responsibility: Community Organising and Assisting Community Programmes Manager with activities.

Part 1: Job Description

PURPOSE OF ROLE

The postholder will work as part of the ‘Reclaim Our Rights’ collective with people experiencing labour exploitation under the Kafala system to organise rights based activities and act as an advocate for ‘Reclaim Our Rights’ including engagement with migrant led groups, external service providers, external organisations, funders and stakeholders. 

SPECIFIC TO POST

Specifically, the Assistant Community Organiser will involve and equip people to organise and campaign for positive change. The postholder will promote the participation of migrant domestic workers impacted by the Kafala System in decisions which affect their lives. 

Specific duties include:

Implement project objectives and programme at the local level

  • In collaboration with the Community Programmes Manager develop and implement a work-plan to deliver on agreed project objectives.
  • Report on a regular basis to the Community Programmes Manager on progress in implementation of agreed plan.
  • Assist in reporting to MWA management, funders and project Evaluators.

Community engagement, organising, and building alliances: 

  • Work with local migrant communities to identify issues of Kafala and inequity to be addressed as a priority.
  • Organise affected group and develop campaigns
  • Organise migrant women and affected groups to participate in rights-based activities and campaigns.
  • Use a range of human rights tools to bring about change on the group’s priority issues.
  • Provide on-going and sustained support to group members.
  • Assist Community Programmes Manager in bi-weekly meetings.
  • Develop relationships with national allies and experts to progress and spread the rights-based approach.
  • Develop appropriate networks of support and expertise to assist affected groups in progressing issues.
  • Identify groups to share learning emerging from MWA’s work and the Reclaim Our Rights collective.

Other Duties

  • Ensure compliance with all statutory and Migrant Workers Action health and safety requirements, including the identification and management of risk.
  • Work to ensure the services adhere to relevant confidentiality requirements GDPR and Migrant Workers’ Action values.
  • Act as key holder for specified office/shared workspaces and secure the building as appropriate. 
  • Develop positive working partnerships with agencies in the local community and from Statutory and Voluntary sectors.
  • Arrange, attend and participate in internal and external meetings as required and act as advocate for migrant community when appropriate 

Risk Management

  • Follow necessary risk management requirements e.g. lone working, on call procedures.
  • Adhere to safeguarding procedures and relevant external standards.
  • Adhere to the appropriate strategies for dealing with / recording / reporting such incidents in line with organisational and legal requirements.
  • When safeguarding issues arise in the context of joint working, and with other delivery partner organisations as appropriate.

Communication (Internal & External)

  • Incident and accident reporting and submission/escalation processes followed as per organisational policy. 
  • Adhere to all aspects of GDPR guidelines including client confidentiality.
  • Multi-agency and multi-disciplinary working.
  • Attend and participate in internal and external meetings as required and act as an advocate for MDW when appropriate e.g. team meetings, multi-disciplinary meetings, delivery partner meetings etc.
  • Maintain appropriate professional relationships with residents, colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of resources and promotional material for Migrant Workers Action.
  • Create networks within existing support services, community groups and seek out opportunities for partnership working with other organisations where appropriate.
  • Through your role work to promote community engagement by creating links with existing community organisations where appropriate.

Supervision

  • Prepare and participate in supervision with the Community Programmes Manager as and when required.
  • Prioritise self-care and personal well-being and request additional support when needed.

Administrative Duties

  • General administrative duties.
  • Ensure finances are recorded on a monthly basis.
  • Monthly timesheets.
  • Ensure compliance with necessary recording requirements and responsibility for accurate and timely completion e.g. Infinity, MyHours etc.
  • Contribute to the monitoring, evaluation and review of Migrant Workers Action community programmes and suggest improvements based on evaluation and review.

Training

  • Ensure completion of all mandatory training within the organisation.
  • Responsible for keeping abreast of current legislation and Migrant Workers’ Action policies and procedures and attend additional training as and when required.

Health & Safety

  • Adhere to Migrant Workers Action Health & Safety Policies and Procedures e.g. Lone Working Policy, Adult Safeguarding Policy etc

Unsocial hours

  • Respond in accordance with planned procedures and agreements as and when required during unsocial hours and/or on weekends.

Part 2: Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

At least 2 years’ relevant experience:

  • Working in a community setting with relevant group or other marginalised communities (e.g. MDW, vulnerable people who have complex needs).
  • Knowledge of community/social justice organising.
  • Knowledge of human rights and equality issues and tools.
  • Knowledge of campaign strategy and development.
  • Leading and facilitating local participation in campaigns, projects or initiatives.
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work on own initiative or as part of a team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with a variety of individuals, organisations and agencies.
  • Commitment to issues of rights, equality and social justice.
  • Commitment and ability to work in a non-partisan way with all sections of society.
  • Willing to travel throughout Lebanon and be willing to undertake occasional overnight stays away from home.
  • Knowledge of the international human rights climate and the plight of MDWs.
  • Knowledge of Lebanon, including governmental and societal structures.
  • Proficient in English speaking and writing. 
  • A passion for advocacy, a desire to see justice upheld, and concern for human rights.
  • Ability to use I.T. systems – Microsoft Word, Excel, email and input information Infinity.

Desirable Criteria

  • Languages: Arabic, Krio, Amharic and/or other language capabilities.
  • Experience using local, national and international policies and legislation
  • Experience of mentoring and developing individuals
